Update on H-1B and H-4 Visa Interviews and New Social Media Screening

We are writing to share an important update regarding H-1B and H-4 visa processing at U.S. consulates abroad, particularly for individuals with interview appointments scheduled on or after December 15.

What Has Changed

Beginning December 15, the U.S. Department of State will apply expanded social media and online-presence screening to all H-1B applicants and their H-4 dependents appearing for visa interviews outside the United States.

As part of this change, U.S. consulates are adjusting their interview capacity to accommodate additional screening. In practice, this has led to:

  • Rescheduling of some H-1B and H-4 visa interviews, particularly those originally set for mid- to late December
  • Later interview dates, in some cases several months out
  • Reports of these changes at consulates in India, including Chennai and Hyderabad

Biometric appointments generally remain unchanged; interview appointments are the ones most affected.

What Applicants Should Do Now

If you have an upcoming H-1B or H-4 consular appointment, we recommend the following:

  • Set social media accounts to “Public”
    • This includes LinkedIn and any other social media platforms you maintain
    • Consular officers may review online profiles as part of the visa adjudication process
  • Review your online presence
    • Ensure that professional information (such as resumes and LinkedIn profiles) is accurate and consistent with your visa application
    • Be mindful of public posts that could raise questions or require additional review
  • Plan international travel carefully
    • If you choose to travel for H-1B or H-4 visa stamping, be aware that visa issuance may be delayed while a consular officer reviews social media and online activity
    • In some cases, this review can take weeks or longer, which may extend your stay abroad beyond your original plans
    • If travel is discretionary, consider whether it can be postponed
  • Monitor consulate communications
    • Appointment changes are being communicated by email
    • Applicants should rely on the updated appointment details provided by the consulate

Additional Background

Expanded social media screening has already been implemented for certain other visa categories earlier this year. The current change extends similar review procedures to H-1B workers and their H-4 dependents. While visa processing continues, the additional screening has required consulates to adjust interview scheduling.
